CHAPTER NINE

“GUESS WHAT, GRANDMA?”

Nora stared at her handsome grandson across the dining room table. He was growing up much too fast. It seemed like only yesterday she’d rocked him to sleep in her arms. But then everything was starting to seem like only yesterday. “I’m terrible at guessing,” she said. “But whatever it is, I’d say it’s good.”

“I don’t have to change schools. I’m going to play baseball for Woodstown.” He reared back and raised his arm as if he were about to toss her a ball. “You’ve got to come see me pitch.”

“I’d love to see you pitch.” She was pleased for him. Still, she’d hoped Madge was ready to move on with her life. She’d seemed to be in a holding pattern ever since she’d lost her husband so many years before. Nora looked at Madge. “You’re not quitting your classes, are you?”

“Nope. Keeping the classes. Giving up sleep.” She leaned over and tousled her son’s hair. “No sacrifice’s too great for the future major league pitching ace.”

Nora lifted her eyebrows. “Oh?”

“Mom’s dropping me off at school before she goes to class in the mornings,” Jake explained. “On the days I don’t have practice or a game, I’m going to stay with my friend Ben. On the other days, Mom can just pick me up at the baseball diamond.”

Nora tried to imagine her oldest daughter getting up at the crack of dawn to make such a long commute, but the image wouldn’t quite jell in her mind. She chided herself for being so negative. It wasn’t as if Madge had never carried through on anything. She’d stuck with being a mom, and Jake was one terrific teenager.

“That’s great,” Nora said, determined to stay positive about all of this. School was only for two more months. Madge could do it.

“Yeah, Ethan talked to Mom about it and she agreed. And Aunt Alison said that one day she’d come over and watch me pitch. And if Ethan’s still here, he can come with her. He can’t really see me pitch, but he said he’d like to come and hear the sound of my pitches walloping into the catcher’s mitt as I strike the other team out.”

Alison and Ethan. Together. An interesting possibility, though not likely. Alison was having too much fun attracting men like Kevin Bosco. “So how is your visit to Cooper’s Corner so far, Ethan?” Nora asked. “Have you had a chance to get out and experience the town?”

Ethan wiped his mouth on his napkin before he answered. “Mostly I’ve just experienced the Fairchild family. That’s been fascinating in itself. But I’m hoping Alison will show me around a little this weekend.”

“Another picnic?” Madge asked. “Without your socks?”

“Definitely without my socks.”

“If you stayed out of cold streams, you wouldn’t have to worry about your socks,” Alison said, tossing her hair and firing off a very seductive, un-Alisonlike look. Maybe she’d judged the situation too quickly, Nora decided.

Dale used to call looks like that a come-on. Nora had used them on him all the time, and he’d always succumbed.
